Unit 8 The D And F Block Elements (Intext Questions-2)

Intext Question

8.2 In the series $\mathrm{Sc}(Z=21)$ to $\mathrm{Zn}(Z=30)$, the enthalpy of atomization of zinc is the lowest, i.e., $126 \mathrm{~kJ} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1}$. Why?

Show Answer

Answer

In the series, Sc to Zn, all elements have one or more unpaired electrons expect zinc which has no unpaired electron as its outer electronic configuration is $3d^{10}$ $4s^{2}$.Hence ,atomic intermetallic bonding (metal- metal bonding ) is weakest in zinc. Therefore, enthalpy of atomization is lowest.
