Unit 8 The D And F Block Elements (Intext Questions-6)

Intext Question

8.8 Calculate the ‘spin only’ magnetic moment of $\mathrm{M}^{2+}{ _(a q)}$ ion $(Z=27)$.

Show Answer

Answer

Electronic configuration of M atom with Z = 27 is $ [Ar] 3d^74s^2 $

Electronic configuration of $ M^{2+} $ will be $ [Ar] 3d^7 $

Thus , it has three unpaired electrons .

$ \therefore $ Spin only magnetic moment

$\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)} B.M. $

where $n=$ number of unpaired electrons

Putting $\mathrm{n}=3$

we get, $\mu=\sqrt{3(3+2)} $

$ = \sqrt{15} B.M. $

$=3.87 \mathrm{BM}$
